
APPROVED RIDERS ACCREDITATION COURSE
To ensure the appropriate conduct and safety of Picnic race meetings, Approved Riders are required to satisfactorily complete the Approved Rider Accreditation Course prior to being licensed and competing in picnic races within NSW.
Prerequisites - Required before enrolling
It is expected that applicants will have advanced riding skills through the vocation of a Trackwork rider. Typically, students who seek to obtain an Approved Rider license have successfully completed the Certificate III Trackwork Rider qualification (or equivalent), or, are able to apply to have their prior skills recognised.

Units required to be completed from RGR Racing and Breeding Training Package

RGRPSH404 Ride horses at trackwork
RGRPSH405 Ride horses in jump outs
RGRPSH310 Prepare for self-management in racing
Delivery Method
Candidates may be required to complete self-directed activity followed by assessment by a Team Thoroughbred NSW Training Academy Trainer and Assessor. Training and assessment is delivered through onsite training conducted at metropolitan and regional areas. An online option is available supported by work-based assessment.
Enrolment Fees
$850 for eligible students Fees are inclusive of materials and resources.
Once applicants complete the Approved Rider Accreditation Course, they will be required to undergo a further medical assessment before returning the following documents to the
Racing NSW Licensing Department:
- Verification of having completed the Approved Rider Accreditation Course
- Application for Approved Rider licence
- Completed medical history form - Licence fee
- Completed Stakes Payment licensee details form (bank account details)
Final Approval
The applicant is next required to attend an interview with Racing NSW Stewards. At this interview you will be required to present at a riding weight of approximately 63kgs.
If successful at the interview, you are then required to complete a minimum of 10 barrier trials that are deemed satisfactory by Stewards to gain your final approval to riding in Picnic races.
